If your perfume vanishes by lunchtime in the summer, the bottle is usually not the problem. Heat accelerates evaporation, and most of us apply fragrance in a way that makes that worse. These are the nine changes that make the biggest difference.
1. Apply to moisturised skin
Dry skin has nothing for perfume oils to bind to, so they evaporate almost immediately. Apply an unscented moisturiser first, wait a minute, then spray. This is the single most effective change most people can make, and it matters more in an arid climate than anywhere else.
2. Apply straight after a shower
Warm, clean, slightly damp skin holds fragrance better than skin that has already been through a day of sunscreen, sweat and air conditioning. Towel off, moisturise, then apply.
3. Use pulse points, but not only pulse points
Pulse points project because they are warm. That also means they burn through the fragrance faster. Pair them with a cooler, more stable spot such as the back of the neck or the inside of a jacket collar so you have both immediate projection and a slow release.
4. Spray fabric as well as skin
Cotton, linen and wool hold base notes for far longer than warm skin does. A single spray onto a scarf, collar or the inside of a sleeve can still be detectable the next day. Test on an inconspicuous area first, as some oils can mark pale silk.
5. Do not rub your wrists together
Rubbing generates friction and heat, which crushes the top notes and forces the composition forward before it has had a chance to open properly. Spray and let it settle.
6. Choose Eau de Parfum over Eau de Toilette in summer
Higher oil concentration means a more robust base. In heat, that is the difference between a fragrance that is still present at hour six and one that is a memory by hour two. Every VALORÉ fragrance is a 100ml Eau de Parfum for this reason.
7. Reapply once, deliberately
Rather than over-applying at 7am and hoping, carry a travel size and refresh once in the afternoon. The VALORÉ Pilates Special Edition Box includes four 10ml minis, which is exactly what this is for.
8. Store it properly
Heat and light degrade the oils in the bottle itself. A closed drawer or wardrobe shelf, never a car, never a sunlit windowsill, never a steamy bathroom shelf. A well-stored bottle performs the way it did on the day you opened it for years longer.
9. Match the fragrance to the day you are actually having
A dense, resinous scent worn outdoors at midday in July will feel overwhelming within an hour and exhaust itself. Save it for the evening, and wear something musk or citrus-led during the day. There is more on this in our full guide to perfume for Dubai heat.
Moisturise first, apply to clean skin at both warm and cool points, add one spray to fabric, use an Eau de Parfum rather than an Eau de Toilette, and refresh once in the afternoon.
An occlusive barrier on the skin does slow evaporation, which is the same principle as applying to moisturised skin. An unscented lotion is the more comfortable option in a hot, humid climate.
Avoid areas in direct sun, avoid spraying over sunscreen, and avoid pale silk or delicate fabrics without testing first.
